  1.               The Partition Resizer FAQ

  3. Please read this document before posting any questions. If you don't find the
  4. answers you're looking for here, please visit the online version of this
  5. document at http://members.xoom.com/Zeleps for more up-to-date information.

  7. Q: Why do I need Partition Resizer?
  8. A: You don't. You can as well backup all your data, use FDISK to repartition
  9. your drive, and restore the backuped data in the new partition. But while this
  10. can take sometimes many hours, and this only if you have a tape streamer
  11. (don't even think about using floppy disks), Partition Resizer will do the
  12. job in 5-30 minutes in most cases.

  14. Q: Where can I find the latest version of Partition Resizer?
  15. A: Best way is to get it from the official page. If this page expires some
  16. day, you should perform a web search to find it. Also, you can always find it
  17. in any SimTel mirror site, like oak.oakland.edu, or nic.funet.fi, in the
  18. directory SimTel/msdos/diskutil under the name presz???.zip. ??? is the
  19. current version number. Another  good way to locate the latest version is to
  20. perform a web or ftp search, using "presz" as the search string (ftp search
  21. can be performed at ftpsearch.ntnu.no).

  23. Q: Why does Partition Resizer move all the data around my disk?
  24. A: This is done for two reasons. Indeed, moving the data is not necessary for
  25. shrinking a partition. But leaving the data in it's original place, results
  26. in unused sectors in the partition's FAT, which is lost space. The second
  27. reason is that you cannot grow a partition without growing it's FAT, and in
  28. order to grow the FAT, you have to move the data. There is of course a much
  29. faster method, of moving only the files that reside in the beginning of the
  30. partition, in order to make space for the FAT, but it is much more complicated
  31. to implement, and I don't feel like spending time for it. Sorry!
  32.  
  33. Q: Why is it that the program shouldn't be run from the working partition?
  34. A: When working, the program writes some data in a file. This file is
  35. overwritten and deleted when the work is over. But after the data moving, DOS
  36. doesn't know there are changes, so it tries to write the data back to the old
  37. position of the file. Worse, when the file is deleted, DOS changes the old
  38. sectors of FAT, which can be any sector in the disk. You understand of course,
  39. that these random writes on the disk can be a dissaster to your data. Apart
  40. from that, the resque file is not deleted properly, so the program will find
  41. it again the next time it runs, and will falsely ask you to continue an
  42. unfinished work. You don't want to know what will happen to your data if you
  43. do the same resizing process twice... Partition Resizer v.1.2.0 and later
  44. detects the partition it is running from, and does not allow any changes to
  45. be performed on it.

  47. Q: Is Partition Resizer compatible with drive compression software (like
  48. Doublespace or Stacker)?
  49. A: The program itself works fine with these, since it doesn't consider them
  50. as drives. Partition Resizer scans ONLY physical drives for partitions.But it
  51. shouldn't be run from a compressed drive that resides in a partition that
  52. will be resized or moved. If you're uncertain about that, just run Partition
  53. Resizer from a bootable floppy disk.

  55. Q: Does Partition Resizer work well with Windows 95 long filenames?
  56. A: Absolutely. Long filenames are not affected, since the program doesn't
  57. mess with directory and file descriptors. Of course, you cannot run Partition
  58. Resizer in a window or a DOS session. You'll have to restart your computer
  59. in MSDOS mode, lock the disks, and then run presizer.

  61. Q: Does Partition Resizer work well with Windows 95 OSR2 / Windows 98?
  62. A: Yes.
  63.  
  64. Q: Is Partition Resizer compatible with Windows NT?
  65. A: Depends. It does not run under Windows NT, and it does not resize NTFS
  66. partitions, but it can move Windows NT partitions and it does not damage your
  67. Windows NT installation.

  69. Q: I run Partition Resizer on my disk, but my XYZ operating system (TM) will
  70. no longer boot, and the boot manager doesn't work. What happened?
  71. A: Partition Resizer changes the partition information stored in the disk.
  72. Most operating systems keep some information about the partition structure in
  73. order to boot themselves, but this information is not updated at boot time,
  74. it is stored when the boot manager or the system files are installed.
  75. Therefore, you should always reinstall boot managers and boot files after
  76. you've run Partition Resizer. This is true for OS/2 boot manager, Windows NT
  77. dual booter and Linux's LILO. Read TROUBLE.DOC for more information.

  79. Q: Why isn't there an undo option?
  80. A: There's no need for that. All actions done by Partition Resizer can be
  81. undone easily by doing the opposite thing from what we want to undo, p.e.
  82. growing undoes shrinking.

  84. Q: I press the left/right arrows repeatedly, but the partition refuses to
  85. change size. What should I do?
  86. A: If you were trying to grow the partition, there isn't enough disk space
  87. available at the end of the drive. If you were trying to shrink the partition,
  88. there are some files residing at the end of the drive, which do not allow the
  89. partition to be shrunk. Even if you defragged the drive, there are still be
  90. some read-only or hidden files remaining at the end of the drive. Please read
  91. README.1ST for more information on defragmentation. This is the ONLY reason
  92. that prevents a partition from shrinking. If you think that you fully
  93. defragged the partition and the arrow keys are still not responding, you are
  94. wrong, because the partition is NOT YET FULLY DEFRAGGED. Please don't ask me
  95. to help you in this case, I CANNOT DEFRAG YOUR DRIVE MANUALY FROM HERE!!!
  96. You just have to try harder...

  98. Q: Partition Resizer shows 3 partitions in my disk, while I've got 2. Is the
  99. program going nuts, or is it me the one who needs therapy?
  100. A: Neither. The third partition shown is an extended partition, a structure
  101. in the partition table that holds logical drives. Since one of your partitions
  102. is a logical drive, it needs an extended partition to contain it. For more
  103. information, check the 3rd section of PRESIZER.DOC file to see some detailed
  104. explaination of the partition structure.

  106. Q: Is partition "hopping" possible? I mean, can I move a partition over the
  107. others?
  108. A: Not directly. If you think about it, there's no need to do that: just
  109. create a new partition in the destination space, move all your data there,
  110. and delete the old partition.

  112. Q: Why can't I shrink my extended partition?
  113. A: It's pretty possible that you have made a common mistake: The extended
  114. partition is not a data partition. What you might want to resize is a logical
  115. drive inside the extended partition. Extended partitions are not DOS drives,
  116. they're just structures that hold logical drives inside them. If you want to
  117. make more space for a new drive, then you'll have to resize a logical drive
  118. and not the extended partition. You will only need to resize the extended
  119. partition if you want to create a new logical drive into it, or a primary
  120. partition outside of it. Just read section 3 of PRESIZER.DOC for details.

  122. Q: Can I change a partition's cluster size with Partition Resizer, and keep
  123. my data?
  124. A: Yes. You have to make a little empty space in the drive by shrinking the
  125. original partition, and then create a small partition and start moving your
  126. data in it, while shrinking the old partition and growing the new one. When
  127. all the data is in the new partition, change the old partition's cluster size,
  128. and move the data back to the old partition using the same technique. This
  129. process might take a bit long, since there's a lot of moving and resizing in
  130. it. But the whole thing is much faster if you have enough empty space in the
  131. original partition. I am planning to implement such functionality in
  132. Partition Resizer, but I don't know when.

  134. Q: Why doesn't Partition Resizer look a bit more fancy?
  135. A: Hopefully it will. I started the development of a new graphic interface,
  136. parts of which you can see in this version (1.3.0).

  138. Q: Why don't you make Partition Resizer a Win32 program?
  139. A: This is an option I consider, although it would be a bit complicated. This
  140. is because all the changes that Partition Resizer does to a hard disk are
  141. extremely dangerous (although possible - beware!) to be done while under a
  142. multitasking environment. Therefore, even if the user makes all his selections
  143. under windows, the program core must be run in DOS mode. I am considering the
  144. possibility of a Windows interface that will co-exist with the current DOS
  145. interface (probably in the same EXE file).

  147. Q: Is the source code available?
  148. A: Nope. Sorry, but I didn't want to give it away for many reasons. After all,
  149. the program isn't donated to the public domain, it's just freeware. You can
  150. use it for free, but that's all. So please, don't post any more messages
  151. requesting the source files.

  153. Q: Why did you give it away for free? Are you stupid?
  154. A: I really believe in the idea of free software. I had many second thoughts
  155. on this, but I finally decided that everyone has a right to use this software
  156. for free as long as he's not using it to get money from others. I just asked
  157. for a postcard, and I've only got less than 20 during the past 4 years the
  158. program's been around the Internet.

  160. Q: OK man, I sent half a thousand e-mails but you continue to ignore me.
  161. What's the deal here?
  162. A: From the 17th of November 1998, and until the 17th of August 2000, I will
  163. be doing my service in the Greek Navy. This is quite unfortunate but
  164. unavoidable (the service is compulsory in Greece). Thus, my e-mail will be
  165. answered rarely (*VERY* rarely), and I will probably not be able to develop
  166. the program during this period. Sorry!
